Skills Training

The skills training program supports clients' growth by building skills that complement counseling through both individual sessions and group facilitation, with an emphasis on practical life skills, emotional regulation, and supportive interventions.

This is a cross-disciplinary program that prioritizes collaboration with clients, our Skills Trainer, counselors, and any other providers in the client's care team, to ensure integrated, client-centered care.

  • How much does skills training cost?
Skills training is covered 100% for OHP/CareOregon clients only. For non-OHP clients, we bill $26 per unit, and 1 unit = 15 minutes. We cannot bill skills training to other private insurances.
  • Where does skills training take place?
The skills trainer will collect you from the lobby just like your therapist does, and will usually take place in the group room.
  • How is skills training different from regular therapy?
Skills training is meant to support clients alongside therapy, and does not replace therapy. While therapists work on your feelings and what strategies you may need to add into your life, skills trainers will actually help you apply those strategies by building and practicing them in a safe and supportive environment.
  • How long does skills training last?
As long as you need to learn a skill. You might see a skills trainer for an hour per week, or more or less depending on what is best for you. While therapy typically occurs weekly for an indefinite length of time, people tend to work with skills trainers as long as it takes to learn a skill. For some people it may take 2 sessions, while for others it may take 20 sessions.
  • Follow-Through & Accountability

  • Communication Skills
Role-play boundary-setting or saying no Practice scripts for requesting help (with professors, bosses, roommates, etc.) Explore ways to reduce masking in social situations
  • Time Management & Planning
Create a weekly visual schedule Set alarms/reminders for tasks and appointments Use time-blocking to plan daily activities Set up a morning or evening routine
  • Emotion Regulation Tasks
Role-play distressing situations to rehearse coping strategies Teach and practice very specific coping strategies Build a “calm down kit” or sensory toolkit Practice identifying emotional states in the body
  • Crisis & Distress Support
Walk through a coping plan step-by-step Assist with scheduling an urgent appointment or support service Coordinate (non-clinical) check-ins during stressful life events
  • Life Skills & Daily Living
Set up a chore or cleaning routine Create a grocery list and meal planning system Help organize bills and due dates Practice using a budgeting app or tracking system Plan transportation or routes to important locations Build a “low-spoons” list for meals, hygiene, or routines
